A smooth full-grain leather outback hat that folds for travel
The 1026 Squashy Fullgrain is a foldable outback hat made from premium American full-grain cattle leather and handcrafted in Minnesota, USA. Most of our Squashy hats have an oiled or waxed vintage look. This one has a smooth, clean finish.
That makes it the dressier choice. It looks right with a sport coat at a wedding on a ranch, and it still works for a walk on the beach or a day on the golf course. Full-grain leather keeps the outer grain layer of the hide, so the surface stays natural. It comes in two colors, Black and Brown.
It’s water resistant with 50+ UV protection. And it packs. Fold it into the travel bag that comes with it and it goes in a garment bag or a carry-on without a hat box. Our guide to packable travel hats has more on traveling with a leather hat.
Choosing your size
Measure around your head with a soft tape, about a finger’s width above the eyebrows and just above the ears, and match the number to our leather hat chart, Small to XXLarge. A free Hat Sizing Kit comes with this hat. Its two foam strips sit under the sweatband to fine-tune the fit. When you’re between two sizes, the larger one plus the kit gives you a fit that feels made for you.
To keep the smooth finish looking good, air dry the hat at room temperature away from heaters if it gets wet, and condition the leather now and then. If you’d like a more rugged, worn-in look, the 1024 Squashy Oiled is cut from Australian cattle leather with an oiled suede finish.

I absolutely love my black 1026 Squashy that I bought last fall. I treat it with aerosol mink oil every 10 weeks to keep it soft and supple. My two issues are that the sizing runs a bit large, but is somewhat resolved with the sizing kit, but far from perfect, and nobody had mentioned the difficulty in keeping it clean from the natural salt deposits left from sweating. This leaves white stains appearing on the inside and outside of the hat. I spend extra time and effort trying to keep ahead of these stains, but have yet to find the best solution to really clean them off. Suggestions would be appreciated. Respectfully, John
