How to measure your hat size (with Barmah size charts)
Wrap a soft tape measure around your head about a finger’s width above your eyebrows and just above your ears. Read the number in inches or centimeters, find it on the chart for the hat you want, and that’s your size.
Between two sizes? Choose the larger size and use the free sizing kit to fine-tune the fit. That’s all there is to it.

How to measure your head for a hat
You need a soft tape measure, the kind used for sewing. No tape in the house? A piece of string or a strip of paper and a ruler do the same job. The whole thing takes about two minutes.
Wrap
Tape on your forehead, a finger’s width above your eyebrows, then around just above your ears and across the fullest part of the back of your head.
Read
Keep the tape level and snug, then read where the end meets the rest. Measure twice and keep the larger number.
Match
Find that number on the chart for the hat you want. Between two sizes, choose the larger one and add a strip from the sizing kit.
Step by step
- Stand in front of a mirror so you can see the tape all the way around.
- Set the tape on your forehead about a finger’s width above your eyebrows.
- Bring it around just above your ears and across the fullest part of the back of your head.
- Keep it level and snug, the way a hatband sits. No need to pull hard.
- Read the number where the end of the tape meets the rest. With string or paper, pinch the spot, lay it flat along a ruler and measure up to your fingers.
- Measure a second time. If the two readings differ, go with the larger one.
- Write it down in inches or centimeters. The charts below list both.
A helper makes this easier. The tape likes to slip down at the back, and a second pair of eyes keeps it level.
Small things that throw the number off
Most measuring slips come down to where the tape sits.
- Tape too low in front. Down on the eyebrows, it reads small. Lift it a finger’s width.
- Tape tilted. If it rides up high at the back, the number changes. Check the mirror.
- Pulled tight. Snug is right. Squeezed reads small, and the hat will feel it.
- Hair different from how you wear it. If you usually wear your hair up, or in a thick braid at the back, measure that way.
Measuring a hat you already own
A hat that already fits the way you like is the best measuring tool you have. Look for a size tag inside the sweatband first. If there’s no tag, run the tape around the inside of the hat along the sweatband, where it touches your head, and read the full circle.
That inside measurement goes on the chart exactly like a head measurement. Don’t double it. The tape went all the way around, so the number is already the full size.

Reading the result
Each chart has four columns. The letter size (S, M, L, XL, XXL) is what you pick on the product page. Centimeters and inches are the head measurement. The US hat size is the traditional number, like 7 1/8, that you may have seen on older hats.
So there’s no math. If your tape reads in centimeters, find your number in the centimeter column and read across: the inches, the US hat size and the letter size are all on the same row. Our charts run from 21 1/16 inches to just over 24 inches.
Barmah hat size charts
We use three charts: one for leather hats, one for canvas, and one for the VE Adventures cotton and polyester hats. Each line is sized a little differently, so use the chart for the hat you’re looking at. Most product pages show the same chart in their photos.

Hat size conversion: every size we make in one table
Already know your number from another hat? Maybe you’re a 7 1/4, or your tape reads 57 cm. This table puts all three of our charts side by side, sorted from smallest to largest, so you can go straight from any number to the letter size in each line.
| Centimeters | Inches | US hat size | Leather | Canvas | VE |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 53.5 | 21 1/16 | 6 5/8 | S | – | – |
| 54.5 | 21 7/16 | 6 3/4 | – | S | – |
| 55 | 21 5/8 | 6 7/8 | M | – | S |
| 56 | 22 1/16 | 7 | – | M | – |
| 56.5 | 22 1/4 | 7 1/8 | L | – | – |
| 57 | 22 7/16 | 7 1/8 | – | – | M |
| 57.5 | 22 5/8 | 7 1/4 | – | L | – |
| 58 | 22 13/16 | 7 1/4 | XL | – | – |
| 59 | 23 7/32 to 23 1/4 | 7 3/8 | – | XL | L |
| 59.5 | 23 7/16 | 7 1/2 | XXL | – | – |
| 60.5 | 23 13/16 | 7 5/8 | – | XXL | – |
| 61 | 24 1/32 | 7 5/8 | – | – | XL |
Two quick examples. Say you wear a 7 1/4. That’s an XL in our leather hats and a large in canvas. In the VE hats it falls between medium and large, so choose the large.
Or say your tape reads 56 cm, a US 7. That’s a canvas medium. On the leather chart it sits between medium (55) and large (56.5), so choose the large and use the sizing kit to fine-tune the fit.
A rule of thumb for US hat sizes
Divide your head measurement in centimeters by 8 and you get the traditional US hat size, near enough. 56 cm divided by 8 is 7. With inches, divide by 3.14 instead: 22 inches comes out at a hair over 7.
It’s a handy check when a hat lists only one system. Metric hat sizes are even simpler, because the size is the centimeter number: a size 57 is a 57 cm head. For ordering from us, though, go by the charts. They list the exact measurement for each letter size.
Small, medium and large aren’t the same everywhere
Letter sizes stand for a range of head measurements, and every hat maker draws those lines in its own place. The same letter can mean a different measurement from one maker to the next. Even our own lines differ: a leather medium is 55 cm and a canvas medium is 56 cm.
That’s why the number on your tape matters more than the letter on an old hat. Measure, then match it to the chart for the exact hat you want.

How the free sizing kit works
Most of our hats ship with a free Hat Sizing Kit. It’s two foam strips and a set of instructions.
The strips go under the sweatband. Tuck one in where the hat feels a touch loose, try the hat on, and move it until the hat sits snug and level. The instructions in the kit walk you through it.
This is why our advice for anyone between two sizes is the same every time: choose the larger size and use the sizing kit to fine-tune the fit.
Have a hat that didn’t come with a kit? The 7512 Sizing Kit is sold on its own in our accessories, with the same two strips and instructions.

Hat a little big? Here’s the fix
A hat with a bit of extra room is the easy case. Room can be taken up in a minute. Here’s how to do it with the kit’s foam strips.
- Put the hat on and settle it level. Notice where it has room: across the forehead, at the back, or all the way around.
- Take it off and tuck one strip under the sweatband at that spot.
- Try it again. Give it a nod and a turn of the head.
- Still roomy? Add the second strip, or move the first one until the hat sits snug and even.
The strips aren’t permanent. Move them, add one or take one out whenever you like, say after a short haircut.
Between sizes? Choose the larger size and use the sizing kit to fine-tune the fit. Say your head measures 22 1/2 inches and you want a leather hat: that’s between large (22 1/4) and XL (22 13/16), so order the XL and add a strip.
How a hat should fit
Snug, with no pressure.
Put the hat on and settle it with both hands. Then run through this quick check in front of a mirror.
- It sits level, about a finger’s width above your eyebrows.
- The sweatband touches your head all the way around.
- Look down at your boots and back up. A hat that fits stays where it is.
- After a few hours there’s no line on your forehead when you take it off.
- A light breeze doesn’t move it.
If all five hold, you have the right size. If it slides toward your ears or lifts at the back when you nod, add a sizing strip.

Most of our styles also fold into an included travel bag and come back into shape when you take them out. Our packable travel hats guide covers the ones that fold, and the drover hat guide explains the outback style itself.
Chin cords for windy days
Even a hat that fits well can lift off in a hard gust on a lake or a ridge. That’s what a chin cord is for.
Several of our hats come with one: the 1057 Canvas Drover, 1047 Ladies Canvas Drover, 1058 Waxed Canvas Drover, 1065 Foldaway Ladies Suede Cooler, 3510 Wide Brim Cooler Sun Hat and 3520 Traveler Hat. The hats we make in Minnesota have a chin cord loop, so you can add our Removable Chin Cord in black or brown.
Get the size right first. The cord is for the wind.

Sizing a hat as a gift without asking
Hats make good gifts, and you can get the size right without spoiling the surprise.

- Borrow a hat they wear a lot and check inside the sweatband for a size tag.
- No tag? Measure around the inside of that hat along the sweatband, then put it back where you found it.
- Ask someone in on the secret. A spouse, parent or close friend may know the size, or can borrow the hat for you.
- Match the number to the chart for the hat you’re buying. If it falls between two sizes, choose the larger size.
If the tag only shows a US size like 7 1/4, the conversion table above turns it into a letter size for each line. Most of our hats come with the free sizing kit, which covers the last little bit, so the hat fits the day it’s opened. And if the size still isn’t right, unworn hats with tags can be exchanged within 30 days.
Hat size questions
How do I measure my hat size at home?
Wrap a soft tape measure around your head about a finger’s width above your eyebrows and just above your ears, keeping it level and snug. No tape? Use a string, then lay it along a ruler. Match the number to the size chart for the hat you want.
What do S, M, L and XL mean in hat sizes?
They are letter sizes that stand for a head measurement. On our leather chart, for example, a medium is 55 cm or 21 5/8 inches (US 6 7/8) and a large is 56.5 cm or 22 1/4 inches (US 7 1/8). Leather, canvas and VE hats each have their own chart, so check the one for your hat.
Are hat sizes the same from brand to brand?
Not exactly. Each maker sets its own measurements for small, medium and large, and even our leather and canvas lines differ: a leather medium is 55 cm and a canvas medium is 56 cm. Go by your head measurement and the chart for the hat you want.
How do I convert centimeters to a US hat size?
Find your centimeter measurement on the chart and read across the row. On our leather chart, 56.5 cm is a large, which is 22 1/4 inches and a US 7 1/8. As a rough check, centimeters divided by 8 gives the US size: 56 cm is about a 7.
What size is a 22 inch head?
22 inches is about 56 cm, roughly a US 7. In our canvas hats that’s a medium (22 1/16 inches). In leather it falls between medium and large, and in the VE hats between small and medium, so choose the larger size and use the sizing kit to fine-tune the fit.
I wear a 7 1/4. What letter size is that?
In our leather hats a 7 1/4 is an XL (58 cm, 22 13/16 inches). In our canvas hats it’s a large (57.5 cm, 22 5/8 inches). In the VE hats it falls between medium and large, so choose the large.
What if I’m between two hat sizes?
Choose the larger size and use the sizing kit to fine-tune the fit. The kit’s foam strips go under the sweatband and take up the extra room.
My hat feels a little big. How do I fix it?
Tuck a foam sizing strip under the sweatband where the hat has room, try it on, and adjust until it sits snug and level. Add the second strip if you need it. Most of our hats include the free sizing kit, and the 7512 Sizing Kit is sold on its own for other hats.
What sizes do Barmah hats come in?
Our leather and canvas hats, plus the 3360 Beachcomber, come in small through XXL. The VE Adventures hats and the 3000 Original Magic Hat come in small through XL. Across all our charts, sizes run from 53.5 cm (21 1/16 inches) to 61 cm (24 1/32 inches).
How should a hat fit?
Snug, with no pressure. It should sit level about a finger’s width above your eyebrows, with the sweatband touching all the way around, and stay put when you nod.
Can I find out someone’s hat size without asking?
Yes. Borrow a hat they wear often and check for a size tag, or measure around the inside of the hat along the sweatband. Match that number to the chart and choose the larger size if it falls between two.
Can I exchange a hat for a different size?
Yes. Unworn hats with tags can be exchanged within 30 days. You can also call us at 800-984-8549 before you order and we’ll help you pick a size.
