Kangaroo, bison, goat or cattle? A buyer’s guide to leather outback hats
Kangaroo leather is thin and strong for its weight. Goat and deer are the softest and lightest leathers we use, bison and oiled cattle leather are finished to look old when new, and suede is the napped underside of the hide. The leather decides how a hat feels on your head and how it looks a few years from now. Here’s how each one wears, and the hats we make from it.

How each leather wears
Every leather hat we sell is water resistant, rated 50+ UV and handcrafted in our Minnesota shop. The brim and crown come from the style. The leather is where the hats really part ways.
We’ve been making hats for over 30 years, and the list of leathers has grown long: kangaroo, American bison, goat, deer, boar, full-grain cattle and cattle suede. Here they are one at a time.
Kangaroo leather
Kangaroo leather is known for being strong for its weight, and it’s thin. On a hat, that adds up to a crown that holds its shape without sitting heavy on your head. We use Australian kangaroo hides and handcraft the hats in Minnesota.
We make five kangaroo styles, and what separates them is mostly the finish. The 1018 Squashy Kangaroo has a stonewash finish and a two-tone hatband. The 1018 Crackle Kangaroo has a natural waxed crackle finish and the Cooper Crossing hatband. The 1018 Distressed Kangaroo comes in ash, moss and whiskey. The 1019 Sundowner Kangaroo is full-grain kangaroo with an even 2 3/4″ brim, and the 1038 Kangaroo Cooler adds mesh sides. You’ll find all five in the kangaroo hats category.

American bison
The 1085 Squashy Bison is premium American full-grain bison leather with a vintage oiled and waxed finish. That finish is designed to look old when new, so the hat shows up already looking like it’s been somewhere. It comes in black, brown and rustic.
It’s a natural choice for hunting, and it takes being crammed into a pack.
“Unlike most good-looking hats, you can stuff it into a backpack without ruining it.”John, verified review of the 1085 Squashy Bison

Goat leather
If you run hot, start with goat. The full-grain goat leather on the 2055 Squashy Goat is extremely soft, thin and lightweight. It comes in cognac, gold and pearl. Pearl is the pale one.
“The white goat skin is very soft and makes for a very nice summer hat.”rfrenzl, verified review of the 2055 Squashy Goat
Deer leather
The 2053 Foldaway Deer is premium full-grain deer leather, and the finish is extremely soft and feather light. It’s the hat you forget you have on.
It uses the Foldaway shape, with a 3 3/4″ crown and an even 2 3/4″ brim, and it comes in black, natural and tobacco.

Boar leather
The 1069 Foldaway Boar is made from genuine USA boar leather in charcoal or whiskey. Look at the whiskey and you’ll see lighter and darker patches across the crown. Like the deer hat, it’s a Foldaway, so it goes into the supplied travel bag.

Full-grain cattle leather
Full-grain leather keeps the outer grain layer of the hide. Most of our cattle leather hats use it, and we finish it three different ways.
The 1022 Squashy Bronco and 1060 Foldaway Bronco have a vintage oiled and waxed finish, designed to look old when new. The 1022 Squashy Bronco Cooper Crossing is the same leather with the Cooper Crossing hatband. The 1026 Squashy Fullgrain goes the other way: American full-grain cattle leather with a smooth, clean finish. And the 1024 Squashy Oiled is Australian full-grain cattle leather with an oiled suede finish.
For the most shade, the 2080 Wide Brim Foldaway Bronco Cooler is American cattle leather with an extra wide 3 3/4″ brim all the way around.
“It was a gift from my wife that I’ll cherish not just for sentimental reasons but because it’s a quality hat made in America!”Richard G., verified review of the 1022 Squashy Bronco

Cattle suede
Suede is the napped underside of the hide, so it has a soft, brushed surface instead of a grain. Our suede hats are American cattle suede in the Foldaway shape.
The 1061 Foldaway Cattle Suede comes in seven colors: black, brown, hickory, sand, gray, tobacco and vintage brown. The 1064 Foldaway Cattle Suede Cooler is the same hat with mesh sides, and the 1065 Foldaway Ladies Suede Cooler adds a chin cord and a sun protection liner at the front.

Bison with a crocodile band
The 1033 Bison Outback Crocodile is premium USA bison hide leather with a genuine crocodile leather hatband set with five genuine crocodile teeth. It has the Squashy brim and a 4″ crown, in black, brown or rustic.
If you want a hat with something to talk about on the band, this is it.

Kangaroo leather vs cowhide
We get asked this more than anything else about kangaroo. Both make a good hat. They get there differently.
The difference starts inside the skin. In kangaroo, the collagen fiber bundles run in an even pattern, mostly parallel to the surface. In cattle hide they weave through each other at all sorts of angles. When a tannery splits a hide thin, the fibers that cross at steep angles get cut, so cattle leather loses more of its strength as it gets thinner. Kangaroo keeps much more of it.
That’s why kangaroo is usually cut thinner than cowhide and still holds up, and why makers of football boots, gloves and motorcycle gear use it wherever weight counts. On your head, it means a light hat with a crown that keeps its shape.
Cattle leather is the fuller hide. A cattle leather hat has more body in the hand, and in our range it comes in finishes we don’t put on kangaroo: the vintage oiled and waxed finish on the Bronco hats, the smooth, clean 1026 Squashy Fullgrain and the oiled suede finish on the 1024 Squashy Oiled. It also gives you the widest brim we make.
So which one? For the lightest hat that still takes hard use, go kangaroo. If you want more body or the widest brim, go cattle.

Finishes explained
Two hats can share a hide and still look nothing alike. The finish is the reason. Here’s what each name on our product pages means.
Crackle
A natural waxed finish that breaks into fine cracks across the surface, a bit like old paint. You’ll find it on the 1018 Crackle Kangaroo in brown crackle or hickory crackle. The 1038 Kangaroo Cooler also comes in brown crackle.
Distressed
Also a natural waxed finish, with uneven color and wear built in. The 1018 Distressed Kangaroo is the one, in ash, moss or whiskey.
Stonewash and vintage
The 1018 Squashy Kangaroo is made from Australian vintage kangaroo leather with a stonewash finish, which gives it a faded, washed look. It comes in ironstone and vintage, with a two-tone hatband.
Oiled and waxed: “designed to look old when new”
This is the finish on the 1022 Squashy Bronco, 1060 Foldaway Bronco, 1062 Foldaway Bronco Cooler and 1085 Squashy Bison. Oiled and waxed finishes shed water, and they darken and mark as you wear them. That’s the idea. The hat starts out looking broken in and keeps collecting character from there.
The 1024 Squashy Oiled has its own version, an oiled suede finish, also designed to look old when new.
Smooth full-grain
No aging added. The 1026 Squashy Fullgrain has a smooth, clean finish on American full-grain cattle leather, in black or brown. Pick it if you want a hat that looks tidy enough for town.

How a leather hat ages
Full-grain leather keeps the whole grain layer of the hide. Nobody sands or buffs it away. So instead of wearing out, it builds a patina as the years go by, and the surface darkens and collects the marks of where you’ve worn it.
How fast that happens depends on the finish. Oiled and waxed hats change the most. They darken and mark with wear, and that’s exactly what they’re for. The crackle and distressed kangaroo finishes start out with plenty of character already built in. The smooth 1026 Squashy Fullgrain starts out clean, so whatever patina it picks up is all yours.
Every day outdoors adds to the patina. A few seasons in, your hat won’t look quite like anyone else’s, even one that left our shop in the same color.
If you’d like a hat that already looks lived in, choose an oiled and waxed finish. If you’d rather watch the change happen, start with the smooth 1026.
“It saw thousands of hours of sun, rain, cold and gallons of sweat.”Maxwell M., verified review of the 1022 Squashy Bronco Cooper Crossing

Cooler hats: leather with mesh sides
Leather on a hot July afternoon sounds like a bad idea. Mesh fixes most of that. These four leather hats have mesh sides for air flow, so heat can get out while the leather crown and brim keep the sun off.

- The 1038 Kangaroo Cooler is Australian kangaroo leather with mesh sides and a sun protection liner at the front, in brown crackle, hickorystone or vintage.
- The 1062 Foldaway Bronco Cooler is full-grain cattle leather with the oiled and waxed finish, in black, brown, driftwood, olive or rustic.
- The 1064 Foldaway Cattle Suede Cooler comes in the same seven suede colors as the 1061.
- The 1065 Foldaway Ladies Suede Cooler is lightweight cattle suede with a chin cord and a front sun liner.
Leather hats in sun, heat and rain
Sun
Every leather hat we make is rated 50+ UV. The brim takes care of the rest. The CDC and the Skin Cancer Foundation both recommend a wide brim, one that shades your face, ears and the back of your neck. Wider covers more.
All of our leather hats have a full brim. The graduated brim on the Squashy hats runs 2 5/8″ at the sides, 2 7/8″ in front and 3 1/8″ at the back, so your neck gets the most shade. The Foldaway hats and the 1019 Sundowner have an even 2 3/4″. And the 2080 Wide Brim Foldaway Bronco Cooler has 3 3/4″ all around, the most shade you’ll get from us in leather.
Heat
Is a leather hat hot? On a still afternoon in August, it can be. Two things help. The first is a thin, light leather: goat and deer are the lightest we use, and kangaroo is light for how tough it is. The second is mesh. Our four Cooler hats have mesh sides so air can move through the crown, and the 1038 Kangaroo Cooler and 1065 Ladies Suede Cooler also have a sun protection liner at the front.
Rain
Every leather hat here is water resistant, so getting caught in a shower is no problem. If you’re out in wet weather a lot, the oiled and waxed finishes are the natural pick because they shed water: the 1022 Squashy Bronco, 1060 Foldaway Bronco and 1085 Squashy Bison. Our suede hats are water resistant too. After a wet day in one, let it dry and then brush the nap back up.
How to care for a leather hat
A leather hat needs less fuss than most people think. Here’s what we’d do, from an ordinary week to the day it comes home soaked.
Everyday handling
Pick the hat up by the brim instead of pinching the crown. Now and then, brush off the dust with a soft brush or a dry cloth. For dirt that won’t brush off, use a cloth that’s barely damp.
Sweat
The sweatband works hardest. After a hot day, wipe it with a damp cloth and fold it out so it can air dry before you put the hat back on.
When it gets soaked
- Shake off the water and blot the outside with a dry towel.
- Fold the sweatband out so it dries too.
- Rest the hat upside down on its crown, or on a hat stand, so the brim isn’t pressed flat while it dries.
- Let it air dry at room temperature. Keep it away from heaters, hair dryers and strong sun. Fast heat dries leather out and can shrink or crack it.
- Once it’s completely dry, give it a little conditioner if the leather feels dry.
Cleaning marks
Start gently. A damp cloth takes care of most marks on grain leather. Leather cleaners and saddle soap can lift a stubborn stain, but they often darken the leather, so try them first on a spot nobody sees, like the underside of the brim. Keep alcohol-based products and solvents off the hat, and never wash it by putting it in water.
Suede
Suede likes a dry touch. Brush it with a soft brush to lift dust and stand the nap back up. Small marks often rub out with a suede eraser or a soft art eraser. For a greasy spot, dust on a little cornstarch, give it time to soak up the oil, then brush it away. Keep soap and water off suede.
Conditioning
Condition the leather now and then, or whenever it starts to look or feel dry. Use a small amount of conditioner made for leather. Work it in with a soft cloth, give it time to soak in, then buff off what’s left. Test it on a hidden spot first, since most conditioners darken leather a little. Suede gets a suede protector spray instead.
Storing
Keep the hat somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sun. Rest it upside down on its crown or on a hat stand, and don’t pile anything on top. A closed car in summer gets far too hot for it. For long stretches, a breathable cloth bag keeps the dust off, and most of our hats come with a calico travel bag that does the job.

How to waterproof a leather hat
Our leather hats are water resistant as they come, and most owners never add anything. If you’re out in steady rain week after week, a water-repellent spray made for leather adds another layer. Clean the hat and let it dry first. Test the product on a hidden spot, because most of them darken leather. Spray a light, even coat, wipe off any drips with a cloth, and let the hat dry naturally. You can add a second coat once the first one is dry. On suede, use only a protector made for suede.
Folding for travel
Squashy and Foldaway hats are made to fold into their travel bag and spring back into shape when you take them out. Our packable travel hats guide shows how to fold each shape.
Quick care rules: lift it by the brim, air dry it at room temperature away from heaters, store it crown down out of the sun, and test any cleaner or conditioner on a hidden spot first.
How to choose by the way you’ll use it
Hot weather
Go light or go mesh. The 2055 Squashy Goat and 2053 Foldaway Deer are the lightest leathers we use. Any of the four Cooler hats above lets air through the sides. If shade on your ears and neck matters most, the 3 3/4″ brim on the 2080 Wide Brim covers more ground than anything else in leather.
Wet weather
Pick an oiled and waxed finish. The sun, heat and rain section above has the details.
Hunting
Earth tones and leather that can take a beating. The 1085 Squashy Bison in brown or rustic is the obvious start. The 1069 Foldaway Boar in charcoal and the 1018 Distressed Kangaroo in moss are good choices too.
Travel
Almost every leather hat on this page folds into the supplied travel bag. Deer and goat weigh the least. Our guide to packable travel hats covers the Squashy and Foldaway shapes, folding, and which hat fits which trip.
Everyday
The 1022 Squashy Bronco is our classic and comes in five colors. If you’d rather have a smooth hat than a broken-in one, get the 1026 Squashy Fullgrain.
Choosing a color
Pick the leather first, then the color, because each leather has its own set. Browns cover most of the range, from chocolate and tobacco to cognac, whiskey and rustic. Black comes on the Bronco hats, the 1026, 1024 and 1019, the bison hats, the deer and the suede. For a lighter hat, look at pearl or gold goat and sand or gray suede.
Keep the finish in mind, too. An oiled and waxed hat darkens as you wear it, so choose the shade you’d like to start from and expect it to deepen.

Curious where the outback shape itself comes from? Our drover hat guide tells that story.

Most of our leather hats include the Hat Sizing Kit free: two foam strips and instructions. The strips go under the sweatband. The hat sizing guide walks through it step by step.

Leather hat questions
What is the best leather for an outback hat?
It depends on how you’ll wear it. Kangaroo is thin and strong for its weight. Goat and deer are the softest and lightest. Bison and oiled full-grain cattle leather are finished to look old when new and shed water well. Cattle suede is soft and comes in the most colors.
Is kangaroo leather good for hats?
Yes. Kangaroo leather is known for being strong for its weight, and it’s thin, so the hat holds its shape without feeling heavy. We make five kangaroo styles from Australian kangaroo leather, handcrafted in Minnesota.
Is kangaroo leather stronger than cowhide?
For its thickness, yes. The fibers in kangaroo skin run in an even pattern, mostly parallel to the surface, so the leather keeps its strength when it’s split thin. Cattle leather is used thicker. On a hat, kangaroo gives you a lighter hat for the same toughness, while cattle leather gives you more body and more finishes to choose from.
What’s the difference between full-grain leather and suede?
Full-grain leather keeps the whole outer grain layer of the hide, with nothing sanded or buffed away. Suede is the napped underside of the hide, so it has a soft, brushed surface. Both are water resistant on our hats.
Can a leather hat get wet?
Yes. All of our leather hats are water resistant, and oiled and waxed finishes shed water. If one gets soaked, shake off the water, fold the sweatband out and let it air dry at room temperature away from heaters. Condition the leather once it’s dry if it feels dry.
How do I waterproof a leather hat?
Our leather hats are water resistant as they come. For extra protection, clean and dry the hat, test a water-repellent spray made for leather on a hidden spot (most darken leather), spray a light, even coat, wipe off drips and let it dry naturally. Add a second coat once the first is dry. Use only a suede protector on suede.
How do I clean a leather hat?
Brush off dust with a soft brush or dry cloth, and wipe marks with a barely damp cloth. Test any leather cleaner or saddle soap on a hidden spot first, since they can darken the leather, and never put the hat in water. On suede, use a soft brush and a suede eraser, and lift grease with a little cornstarch.
How should I store a leather hat?
Somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sun and away from heat such as a closed car in summer. Rest it upside down on its crown or on a hat stand so the brim keeps its shape. For long-term storage, a breathable cloth bag like our calico travel bag keeps the dust off.
Will my leather hat change color over time?
Yes, and that’s part of the appeal. Full-grain leather builds a patina, darkening and picking up marks as you wear it. Oiled and waxed finishes change the most. The smooth 1026 Squashy Fullgrain starts out clean and ages at its own pace.
Which leather hat is coolest in summer?
Pick a hat with mesh sides: the 1038 Kangaroo Cooler, 1062 Foldaway Bronco Cooler, 1064 Foldaway Cattle Suede Cooler or 1065 Foldaway Ladies Suede Cooler. Without mesh, the 2055 Squashy Goat and 2053 Foldaway Deer are the lightest leathers.
Do leather hats fold for travel?
Most of ours do. Squashy and Foldaway styles fold into the travel bag supplied with the hat and come back into shape when you take them out.
Where are Barmah leather hats made?
Every leather hat in this guide is handcrafted in our shop in Minnesota, and we’ve been making hats for over 30 years. The hides come from different places: our kangaroo is Australian, the bison and suede are American, and the boar is from the USA.
