An extra wide brim canvas cooler hat
The 1087 Extra Wide Brim Canvas Cooler is an extremely lightweight poly cotton canvas outback hat with an extra wide brim, mesh sides for airflow and a sun protection liner at the front. It’s handcrafted in Minnesota.
Some days call for all the shade you can get. July on a pontoon. A full Saturday weeding the garden. A beach with no umbrella. This hat was made for that. The brim is half an inch wider all the way around than on our 1057 Canvas Drover, which adds shade over your ears and neck.
Wide brims can feel heavy and hot. This one doesn’t. The canvas is extremely lightweight, and the mesh sides let air move through the crown so heat doesn’t build up under the hat. It’s water resistant with 50+ UV protection, so a sudden shower or a cloudless noon sun are both covered.
Colors are Beige, Brown, Cream and Khaki. Cream and Beige look clean with summer clothes. Brown and Khaki hide dust and dirt from the trail or the barn.
The shape is a close cousin of the classic drover, the wide-brimmed hat worn by Australian stockmen who moved cattle over long distances. Our drover hat guide explains the history.
Getting the right size is easy. Measure around your head with a soft tape, about a finger’s width above the eyebrows and just above the ears, and match the number to the size chart on this page. If the canvas gets wet, let it air dry.

It’s been quite awhile since I purchased this hat. It has held up well and the wide brim keeps the sun and rain off my head and face. It is simple but still has some style. I can recommend this for anyone needing a good sun hat.

I just ordered a new replacement for my old extra wide brimmed canvas cooler. My old one has been worn regularly for over 20 years – maybe 25. It has served me spectacularly and I’m still wearing it today. I have purchased a couple of less expensive hats over the years because I couldn’t find another like mine, but none have been as comfortable as my Barmah and I always ended up back wearing it.
The braided leather band shrunk over the years (or my head grew) but I just loosened it in the back and it’s been fine. It even still has the original cord! What hat last 20+ years working out in the Texas heat? A Barmah hat does!! That’s why I’m ordering another one. I searched for the name from the metal tag on my hat band and I was so glad to locate your website.
