A kangaroo leather cooler hat with mesh sides for hot weather

The 1038 Kangaroo Cooler is a leather outback hat built for heat. It’s made from Australian kangaroo leather, handcrafted in Minnesota, USA, with mesh panels in the sides that let air move through the crown.

Leather and summer don’t always go together. The mesh is the fix. A breeze can pass through instead of trapping warm air over your head, and a sun protection liner at the front keeps your forehead covered. The leather itself is water resistant with 50+ UV protection, so you still get a real leather hat when the weather turns.

Kangaroo is a thin hide known for being strong for its weight. That keeps this hat light, which you’ll appreciate on a July afternoon mowing, working cattle or walking a trail. Choose from three colors: Brown Crackle, Hickorystone and Vintage.

It folds into the travel bag that comes with it, so you can pack it for a beach week or a road trip south. A free Hat Sizing Kit comes with it as well.

Sizing and care

Measure around your head with a soft tape, about a finger’s width above the eyebrows and just above the ears, and match it to the leather hat chart, Small to XXLarge. The two foam strips in the sizing kit go under the sweatband to fine-tune the fit. If your number lands between two sizes, take the larger one. The kit takes care of the last bit. When the leather gets wet, air dry it at room temperature away from heaters, and condition it now and then.

    If you’re thinking about buy this hat: BUY IT.
    I bought this Kangaroo Cooler at the beginning of summer this year, and it’s by far the most versatile hat I have ever owned. It’s kept my head cool all summer long, and I’ve received more complements for this hat than any of my other hats combined. This hat is my daily driver.
    I first learned of Barmah some years ago from a friend who also wears his daily and I immediately fell in love with how Kangaroo leather feels and its packability and ability to pop back into shape with ease.
    I love how the brim sways on windy days, so it won’t fly off your head!
    The mesh is tough, and although very stiff at first, it becomes moldable like the rest of the hat.
    I only have a couple bad things to say about this hat, and they’re not deal breakers. I don’t like how the hat band is glued on. It hasn’t come off yet, but I can see maybe years down the line this being an issue. Also, the hat itself can get scratched up easily. Keep this in mind if you plan on hiking with this and encounter some low branches. And lastly, this hat is just so tough and near perfect I can’t find a good excuse to buy another one in a different color!
    This is a 5/5 hat. Get it.
    These Aussie hats are run small. I usually wear a Large or 59/60cm in most hats. I got a XL, and it fits perfectly.
